Out of School, Into the Library: ZODML Summer Activities for Kids
For some, the summer holiday means lazy days, lounging around, and losing all memories of homework, textbooks, and exams. However, for children and teens who visit the ZODML Community Library, summer means great books, sharp writing skills, and a head start on their classmates come September – and all for free.
By running a number of successful projects such as Catch Them Young (CATHY), Junior and Secondary School reading programmes, the Internet Learning Centre, and Oasis Libraries, ZODML has connected thousands of young people to the books, technology and inspiring figures they need to help them achieve their goals and become successful young leaders. Visitors to the Library on Awolowo Road enter a cool and inviting space, where children big and small crowd around the helpful librarians, eager to sign out their favourite books (those looking for a quiet place to study, never fear – the upstairs rooms are reserved for Friends of the Library and are a perfect place to nail the ICAN practice papers). While many of the kids at the Library are special members through their participation in one of ZODML’s reading programmes, many are the offspring of parents who, having spotted the Library, visited and decided to take advantage of the extensive collection of children’s books available to borrow. Casual browsers are more than welcome, but for the child looking to while away the long summer days, there are a number of great activities to join in on:
Pick’n’Read: select a book of your choice from our large collection of children's titles and read in the peace and quiet of the Library. Children who read 10 books or more will win a prize!
Get Someone to Read: a extra challenge to top readers - invite a friend or sibling to the Library to start winning and receive a gift for yourself!
Drawing: show off your creativity with a range of pens, paper and other drawing materials. Prizes will go to the three best drawings.
Computer classes: brush up on your ICT skills – whether typing, graphic design or web-based research – to prepare for the school year. Registration ahead of time is required.
With enthusiastic and dedicated staff and volunteers supervising all activities, it is normal to find kids already at the door at 9am (the Library’s opening time), ready for another day filled with colour, exploring and fun.
